In the recent past, the improvement in economic conditions of many developing countries is commendable. Economies are growing at an enormous pace and competing with the superpowers. With liquidity in abundance and nurtured supply of resources, economic problems are a passé for the bourgeois. But has this been reflected to the entire workforce of the nation. Going by the analysis, a major 18% population in the developing countries is still below poverty line. A lot needs to be achieved at the social front for many nations around the world.
The development bias has led to many social abuses like child labor, prostitution, illegal trafficking or organs, hazardous diseases like AIDS and many more unlisted. It is despicable to let the sufferers lead a life of misery. Many government institutions and NGO's are playing a noble cause in ameliorating the problems. On the global front CRY, WHO and UNICEF have already succored billions of victims. Funding the immediate problem cannot be neglected. But are we doing justice to the progeny by satisfying the short term goals and not eradication the problem from the roots?
As per the old adage "Prevention is better than cure", still stays strong. The majority of funds should be allocated for the long term research and eradication of social stigmas. This would uproot the problem for lifetime and the struggle to uplift the victims would be resolved. Prostitution has been a major problem to tackle in most parts of Africa and south-east Asian countries. Millions of victims are enticed into this profession. With lack of basic education and a bleak future ahead leaves them in a stalemate to opt for this iniquitous profession. Rather than fighting for the women who are already a victim of destiny, we should unite and protect further involvement of young girls into this profession. Providing them with opportunities to work and make a living for themselves would eradicate the problem for the roots. The organizations should provide them with compulsory and free education to provide them the sustenance. With bright career aspirations and passion to excel there would be left no compulsions to sell of their skins for a few currency notes.
Secondly, with easy access to alcohol and drugs the society is grappling with another major stigma-AIDS. Not practicing celibacy with numerous carriers of infection and inadequate medical facilities add to the ever growing list of affected victims. The cure for the disease is not yet traced. Lots of contributions and funds are being utilized for treatment of the affected. But a lot needs to be covered on the research front so that we are able to find out an escape from the treacherous problem. More funds should be allocated to the bioresearch and engineering departments of major research institutes to overcome the stigma. Educating the youngsters and the bourgeois for whom discussing AIDS is still considered a taboo is sacrosanct. Sex education needs to be imparted at primary levels. A healthy mind is essential to propel a healthy body and environment.
The world is grappling and trying to figure out a solution to the interminable social crisis. Despite billions of dollars spent worldwide to succor the victims, the problem still lies unmanageable. If a major portion of the funds is utilized in good moral upbringing of the individuals and society, I am sure the world would certainly be a different place to relish. Crippling the problem at the roots would help us eliminate the social stigmas and relive the burden off the shoulders of many a million involved in revival.
