Society does not place enough emphasis on the intellect - that is, on reasoning and other cognitive skills.

Since evolution of mankind and its metamorphosis into a capable and shrewd living organism the surroundings have played an inalienable role for man. The society in which an individual dwells reflects the outlook of the individual and shapes hiss approach towards life. The living society is indisputable a major considering factor that entrust upon a man’s intentions. But does one’s society always dissuade an individual’s intellect, i.e. its reasoning and cognitive skills? I would contrast the statement propounded b the author. The role and significance of society on an individual is paramount. But society does not always impediment an individual’s intellectual growth. The intellectual growth of an individual may prosper or stall depending on the relative social background. One may flourish who is a part of a modern and non-insular society whereas somebody who has been living in a society where issues like AIDS and sex-education are still considered a taboo, he may be restricted in his m...

As prices go up, so does demand.

An interesting article from the Economist. Worth preserving. Not many economic papers start with a quote that suggests the authors will “be assured immortality, professionally speaking, and rapid promotion while still alive.” Here, it may just prove true. Robert Jensen and Nolan Miller, two Harvard professors, have shown the actual existence of an elusive economic construct which has so far only existed as a gleam in the eyes of theoretical economists: a good for which demand goes up when prices rise, and falls when prices go down. These “Giffen goods” show up in every introductory economics textbook as a freak case when the law of demand fails. Legend describes the Irish potato famine as a possible example: as the price of potatoes rose, people were so poor that they started substituting potatoes, a dietary staple, for meat and other unnecessary luxuries. The Irish consumed more potatoes as a result. The trouble with this example is that Ireland was having a famine. The rising potato ...

The Masjid Mania

The military attack by Pakistan on its indigenous Lal Masjid has taken a lot of stick from the chauvanic Islamic pundits. But the audacious act by President Musharraf, whether or not goaded from US or China should be commended upon. The president has taken a first ever courageous step to thwart the malign intentions of extremists residing within the country and using creed and religion as a major agenda to fight against humanitarian causes. But the major setback came when the Al-Qaida protagonist al-Zhawari launched an verbal attack against the president and his forces describing their effort as atrocious and un-Islamic. He openly confessed that this brutal deed can only be repented by Musharraf's blood. Although such vacuous threats would have little or no effect on the President and his forces, but the country can in now way remain ignorant from the valiant efforts and courage displayed by the extremist group. Moreover, with support from major superpowers like USA and UK it would...
